Cabinet Scrapers Are A Must For Any Woodworker - ToolsRUs
Commonly used by woodworkers, cabinet scrapers are needed to reduce high spots or smooth out boards. Pre-milled lumber sold in stores is seldom perfectly true. Wooden creations can end up irregularly shaped if the wood is not properly prepared, so it is the cabinet maker's job to see to it that it is. Since scrapers are easy to re-edge and maintain, a worker shouldn't have to replace it frequently. For things like tabletops, many woodworkers swear by this tool. It can both level and smooth the wood simultaneously, largely eliminating the need to do a lot of sanding.

A cabinet scraper is little more than a flat, rectangular-shaped piece of high carbon steel. Available in a few sizes, scraper are usually five or six inches long and no more than 0.6 or 0.8 millimetres in thickness. You use the long edge of the scraper to remove wood shavings. In order to be useful, a scraper must have a burnished (rounded) long edge forming something called a burr. The burr is nearly impossible to see since it is only 0.05 millimetres or less high. Scrapers don’t come with a burr, so you will have to prepare them after purchase. It only requires a few tools, and it is quite easy.
Before you can make a new burr on an existing scraper, you need to file off the old burr. For newly purchased scrapers, you can forgo this step. Remove an old burr by running a file along the broad side of scraper – on both sides. Next, you will want to flatten the narrow edge because it was rounded slightly when you made the last burr. You can use a file for this, too. To finish, use a hard, carbon-steel burnishing tool and push it forcefully along the edge of the newly-flattened scraper, making sure to cover the entire length of the tool. The burnishing tool will once again round the edge slightly and form the wave-like hook that is a burr.
When using cabinet scrapers, go with the grain of the wood, so you don’t cause any gouges. An edge will get dull in about ten minutes of use, so frequent sharpening is required. When scraping only produces dust, not shavings, it is necessary to smooth out the edge and reform the burr.
