DIY Home Repairs. Replacing Your Dryer Belt
Remodeling Your Home Doesn't Have to Cost an Arm and a Leg
Because times are tough economically, many people have decided not to modernize their house because it's too costly. If you're in that same predicament, you can rest easy that you can give your house an overhaul with upgraded features and not have to spend tons of money.
Making Your Remodeling Dollar Go Further
Start with the basics when contemplating a remodel. Assess from ceiling to floors first. This is the foundation for your remodel. If you have an acoustic ceiling, consider either repainting it a bright white or hiring someone to resurface and retexurize it with a even pattern. Don't forget to have a strong primer applied before your paint coat! Next, look at the walls and choose a neutral shade that will go with a brighter and more natural mood and will go with any designs and decorations. Patch holes and dents in the walls to give the home a finished look. Next, continue with the floor areas: are the flooring and baseboards in good repair? If yes, re-paint the baseboards a nice white color to make everything look brand-new again. If you plan to tear out and lay new coverings on the floors, consider ceramic tiles, because they are easy on your wallet per square foot and last much longer than carpet does. If you will be installing carpeting, choose a dense pile that is somewhere between brown and beige so that spills won't show as much and the carpet will be resistant to crushing for many years.
Kitchens and Bathrooms are Key
Remodeling your kitchen and bathrooms are the best investments you can put into your home. If the cabinetry is in good structural shape, consider either refinishing the existing cabinets or re-facing them. If you will be refacing them, get a good cordless drill and remove the hardware from the cabinet doors to free them. If needed, you can purchase new cabinet facing from your local do-it-yourself store. For an even better money-saving renovation, choose to refinish the existing cabinets. Again, detach the doors from the cabinets and then sponge or rub on a paint removing chemical to the existing finish and scrape it off with a special scraper made from hard plastic just for this purpose. Once all of the finish has been removed, sand the cabinets the first time with a disc sander using medium-grade sandpaper. A final sanding should be completed with a fine-grade sandpaper after that. Rub the cabinets with a cloth to remove the dust and then apply a wood conditioner to the cabinets. Finally, stain or paint the wood and top it off with two or three clear coats to protect the finished product from exposure to moisture.
How to Make an Impact Through Design
Modernizing your furniture and home décor is a simple, but dramatic way to make your home looking sharp. You can find great deals at garage sales, thrift stores and on the Internet which will save money. For even bigger savings, make furniture pieces by hand. You can make a unique headboard, for example, with nothing more than two oversized wooden spindles, a lathe machine (you can lease this from someone), and a large rectangle of wood. Cover the wood in the center area with some batting, fabric, and modern upholstery tacks for a new headboard that is sure to impress!
Perhaps you're fixing up a new home or wanting to re-do the one you live in. Either way, these great tips for getting the place you live to look its best will help your house look like new without spending a ton of dough in the process.
