Frequently Asked Questions...
Betta vs pleco?
Bettas and plecos are said to do well together in a tank, and I have been very successful with the combo in the past. My betta was fine until I did the first water change with them together. I put them, in a smaller container, and I guess my betta got claustophobic, because he started attacking my pleco. He continued after the cleaning was done, so I decided to put the betta in the isolation tank. Now they can see each other but not touch.
It has been almost a week. Should I let my betta back in the main tank? My pleco's fins are rughed up and there is a bite from his tail, but they are starting to heal.
I have another betta who has never seen the pleco, but flares more at other bettas, so I am assuming he may be more aggressive, but I am not sure with other fish.
(Do not give me the betta-lives-alone talk. I have had bettas for years and have found decent tankmates like cories and other bottom feeders. This is not my first betta-pleco combo.)
Answer:
It may have just been the trauma of the cleaning. The only thing you can do is put the betta back in the tank to see if it was an isolated incident, and keep watch. Take it out if it is still being aggressive and give up on that one. It's not worth traumatizing your pleco. I have a pleco (15 1/2") that will only take so much from a fish bugging them. I will come home and the pleco is sitting on the bottom with the fish that bugged him in his mouth calmly chewing him to pieces!! Otherwise he doesn't bother any of them. Have you tried a bag (like you bring home fish from the pet store) to float the other betta in the tank to see if he pays attention to the pleco?
