Fun And Games At The Country Fair
When you are young, summer is all about long lazy days and being out of school for a few months. If your childhood was spent in a small town, summer also meant going to the annual country fair. And country fair time was the basis of some of the happiest memories you have.
Making a bee line for the cotton candy stand was the first thing to do after arriving at the fairgrounds. It cost so little, for all the fun you got, first watching as the cotton candy machine spun out the fluffy pink stuff. Then, pulling off mouthfuls of sugary stickiness was a sure sign that fair fun had started.
The Ferris wheel was the next stop, and once the safety bar was in place you held on tightly with cotton candy-sticky hands. Round and round you went, and if you were lucky it would stop for more passengers while your car was at the top. The view from up there was as exhilarating as the slightly rocking car was scary.
After that you went to the game booths on the fairway, promising wonderful rewards to those who could beat them. You could try knocking over heavy bowling pins with a soft ball. Another game involved tossing small gold rings, about the size of mens wedding bands, onto tall thin posts that moved in a circle. None of the games was ever as easy as you thought it would be.
Perhaps either skill or luck, or most likely a combination of both, would let you win enough points to get a prize. There were so many to choose from, and it was hard to decide between the fuzzy stuffed purple dinosaur and the glittery plastic fake crystal necklace. Then there were beanie caps with propellers, and crazy spiral eyeglasses. It seemed to take forever to make a selection.
After all that effort some more energy was required, and it was difficult to decide between the fresh soft pretzels and the juicy hot dogs in the next food stand. Of course, buttered hot popcorn was always delightful. Too bad that there was not enough time to eat everything.
Next on your tour there was the rodeo, where a brightly painted clown was entertaining the crowd with various antics and clumsy juggling. What a great job you thought it would be, to spend all your time working as a clown in country fairs in all the towns. But something puzzling, you suddenly noticed, was the scuffed brown boots worn by the clown, just like the pair your seventh grade teacher always had on.
Tired and sunburned, but very happy, you finally went home with wonderful memories of another fun country fair. Untroubled by an overfull stomach, you were drifting off to sleep almost before your head was on your pillow. But just as you fell asleep you thought again about your seventh grade teacher and wondered just what he spent his summer doing.
