DIY Chicken Coop Plans

There are many things to think about before your start building your chicken coop. These factors are vitally important to ensure a successful project. They are covered in the book: “Backyard Chicken Farming” which is a compact 34 page ebook available for free at www.suburban-farmer.com

This article will touch on some of the preconstruction tips contained in the book. Taking a DIY approach is possibly the best option as there is money to be saved and a great feeling of self-satisfaction to be had from building your own chicken coop.

It will be a lot easier if you have good plans that need no more than basic tools and basic skills. The book mentioned above has a recommendation for plans as well. A good set of plans should cost you about $30. It's not necessary to pay more as there are very good books of plans available at that price.

Pre-construction Tips

Most bird breeds need sunlight, shelter, and adequate running space to lay an optimal amount of eggs each week. Give some serious thought to these issues before you build your chicken coop:

- Build a bigger coop than what you originally intended. Even if you don’t want to expand in the near future you’ll be gald for the space – and so will your chickens. A protable, small coop can house up to 3 birds. 10 or more birds means a large coop.

- Think about how you will get water to the coop. You don’t want to be carrying buckets of water to and fro. That's no fun at all!

- Get waterers and feeder that help take the tedium out of providing an adequate supply of water and feed.

Include protective measures into the build plan. There are a number of creatures out there that want to eat your birds and their eggs. The type of predator determines the type of protection needed. The “Backyard Chicken Farming” book mentions above has a big section on predators and protection.

- Build your coop so that it gets a good amount of sun, especially in the morning. Constructing near trees is also a positive thing, as long as they don't block out the natural sunlight.

Chicken Coop Plans On The Internet?

There are literally hundreds of places on the internet to purchase & download chicken coop plans. Some of these are inferior quality and most have very limited designs and plans. Before you buy any plans you should make sure that you are prepared for your new hobby. Get the comprehensive (and free!) ebook at www.suburban-farmer.com which will help you.
