So you know where I'm via, I'm replacing a 50" Samsung plasma. I have a volume of various sized flat panels at home and a home theater inside the basement. I just had my 720p Mitsy projector replaced having a Sony (STR-DA3600ES) as well as Avatar on Blu-Ray blew me personally away (108" display screen). DirecTV said just "plug it in, the receiver will walk you with the set up once this recognizes the 3D TV". Not quite right, for me anyway, but a restart of the receiver and I was installed and operating.
2D-HD - I started with Kill Bill 2 on TNTHD also it looked great. Some HD looks a lot better than others, not surprisingly. For example, 30 Rock must use some type of softening lens.
AppleTV (720p) - YouTube looks slightly better than I thought it will. From Apple's movie catalog, previews of 300 and also the Bucket List looked sharp. Netflix streaming looked as well as it did on the 50" Sammy, and that's a positive thing. Photos from Mobile Us via my iPhone viewed great.
3D on DirecTV : Started with n3D, which I now realize is incredibly analogous to Mark Cuban's HDNET the government financial aid the early days of HD. It's where you is going for the fun primary impression. A lot of scenic/nature written content. It impresses right absent.
Family take - 11-year old boy loves it. Despicable Me in three dimensional is wow-ing him. 15-year old daughter also. I prefer the advanced glasses, but the kids just like the basic ones. 3D sports - We downloaded the National World-class game (Auburn as opposed to Oregon) via DirecTV and although I love it better than the particular active shutter, I'm not sure I wouldn't prefer a plain crisp HD for sports activities. I watch a ton of sports, and my initial reaction to sports in 3D together with both passive 3D (this kind of set) and active 3D (the other available 3D technology) is mixed at this point in time.
Vizio 3D Blu-Ray gamer - Started with Dinosaurs, IMAX Under The Seashore, Alice in Wonderland, and Polar Express. The player is quick and intuitive with the Internet app screen for the reason that main screen. Disney's Alice in Wonderland is fabulous and I'm the majority of surprised by how satisfying the image depths are usually. IMAX Under The Sea has got the cool IMAX 3D number countdown at the beginning - fun. The sea images give "whoa" reactions from your family. The tech of the whole thing falls away after a few moments and the experience is immersive there after. The player is sharp.
3D thoughts, as this set is passive 3D (as opposed to active 3D)
Passive 3D gets almost everything right it claims, IMO. The glasses are gentle and easy. It's nice they usually are inexpensive (I bought10 sets of RealD glasses via Amazon for $25 10 - Pairs - Brand new Sealed - 3D Sale paper Polarized 3D Glasses identical to RealD for Disney Digital -Legend on the Guardians (10 Frames) -they work great). Also easy to stay and glance down at my lap top on occasion. I surely don't wish I was concerned with the active 3D syncing, battery life, and if someone might sit on them. My brother-in-law walked in and I tossed a couple glasses across the space. He slapped them in and said "Wow, that's awesome". He also has 3 kids under 6 yrs . old. No way he actually buys $100 glasses (that is what the active model of 3D requires) for the bunch.;)
The knocks on passive 3D are a little over stated in my opinion. You'll find these concerns if you surf around the world-wide-web researching 3D TV possibilities.
- Claim: "Black lines" - These are (barely) presently there, however, they only are appreciable when you get within 3-4 feet from the screen. I liken it for the screen door effect. If the TV is big enough so you get close enough, you'll see them. This concern ended up as a no-big-deal item.
- Claim: "Turning head sideways damages the 3D" - nope. Not an issue.
- Claim: "The 3D-ness severely degrades with off-angle viewing" - Not for me. It does lessen somewhat though. Otherwise, walking around the room provides yoyo-ing 3D image which follows you. Cool.
- Claim: "Half resolution" thing - Didn't even eventually me when watching the idea. No comments from family members about less of anything where picture quality goes.
- Claim: "Cross talk" - Not seeing it. Maybe if some one particular pointed it out to my opinion?
More thoughts...
It is high gloss and I could see where a heavily windowed room may be an issue. Fine for me with flanking windows and also a (non-windowed) wall facing it.
Make sure your space are designed for a 65-incher. I'd recommend being at the very least 8 ft away, with 10+ ft currently being better. This thing is huge.
I think I'm legally spoiled by HD and after this 3D as standard def is getting harder to watch. Not sure if this is the TV or just me.
Final thoughts...
My ordered list of priorities when i bought this TV have been size, price point, and then 3D. Well, the size is significantly (just not a little bit) larger than my 50-incher - check. The price was suitable at 3G's - check. The 3D has undoubtedly exceeded my expectations -- check. The 2D has met my hopes for the reason that I'm very happy while using black levels (although they may be not as deep to be a plasma). For me, this is a great gen-
Vizio 3D TV. I'm sure future years will take 4K2K and improved technological, but at a cost. For today, this hit the position and was an incremental improvement over my 2-yr previous Samsung plasma.
Update (7/5/11) -- After 5 months, I had to come back and bump my status from 4 to 5 superstars. Long gone are purchasing of over-analyzing this TV SET. The longer I bought it, the more I enjoy it. No regrets. (Tip: Get Tron Legacy 3 dimensional. O-M-G).
