Is 8 ga. wire with "THHN OR THWN-2 ...TWN75 OR T90" printed on it adequate for a 50A breaker & 50A receptacle?
I am hooking up an electric furnace in my garage and am installing a dedicated 50 amp breaker and receptacle for it. I have 8 gauge wire on hand so, if that is adequate, I'd like to use it as opposed to having to buy 6 gauge. The run is about 50 feet from panel to receptacle. The full text on the wire reads "THHN OR THWN-2 OR MTW OR AWM GASOLINE AND OIL RESISTANT II VW-1 600V TWN75 OR T90 NYLON".

and look at page 3, the model of heater that I have is AMFK14. I don't understand how to read the technical data so I am just going with 50A being enough per the previous owner. Let me know if you see something different!
Answer:
If you are using thhn/thwn then the ampacity is 50 amps based on the 75 degree column. Most terminations are good for the 75.Check the breaker and teh disconnect to see whether the 75 column is ok. It will be. You derate from the 90 column, but I dont think this is a problem here. You will only have 2 current carrying conductors and a ground. You are good.
Make sure that if you run Romex wire that you have to use the 60 degree column and therefore you will need to use #6. If you run it in conduit with thhn you can use #8.
